When we purchase eggs at the supermarket the packaging often features images of happy, plump birds with shiny feathers, and phrases like “cage-free” and “free-range” are scrawled in an attractive font across rolling green fields. Unfortunately, this advertising doesn’t represent the reality of an average chicken’s life in the egg industry. Their lives are often short, uncomfortable and without any real enrichment. This painting was inspired by one of our first ex laying hens, Rita. Rita was particularly bald, pale and battered. she was intuitive, curious and adventurous. I'm glad we could offer her a safe haven for her remaining time on earth.
The humble hen is much forgotten, despite frequenting our plates more often than not.
